Putnam County is located in West Central Indiana and is bound by Montgomery County to the north, Parke County to the west, Owen County to the south and Hendricks and Morgan Counties to the east.

Putnam County is divided into 13 townships. Most of the townships were surveyed to include 36 sections. But the southern four townships in the county do not include the traditional 36 sections. As such, it is difficult to locate a cemetery or other landmark by section number alone. The Putnam County Townships are as follows:

 

Jackson Township is in the northeast corner of Putnam County. The legal description of Jackson Township is Township 16N, Range 3W.  Jackson Township is bound by Franklin Township to the west, Floyd Township to the south, Hendricks County to the east and Montgomery County to the north.

 

Franklin Township is in the north central portion of Putnam County. The legal description of Franklin Township is Township 16N, Range 3W.  Franklin Township is bound by Russell Township to the west, Jackson to the east, Monroe Township to the south and Montgomery County to the north.

 

Russell Township is in the northwest corner of Putnam County. The legal description of Russell Township is Township 16N, Range 5W.  Russell Township is bound by Franklin Township to the east, Clinton Township to the south, Parke County to the west and Montgomery County to the north.

 

Clinton Township is in the northwest portion of Putnam County. The legal description of Clinton Township is Township 15N, Range 5W.  Clinton Township is bound by Madison Township to the south, Monroe Township to the east, Russell Township to the north and Parke County to the west.

 

Monroe Township is in the north central portion of Putnam County. The legal description of Monroe Township is Township 15N, Range 4W. Monroe Township is  bound by Clinton Township to the west, Franklin Township to the north, Floyd Township to the east and Greencastle Township to the south.

 

Floyd Township is in the northeast portion of Putnam County. The legal description of Floyd Township is Township 15N, Range 3W. Floyd Township is bound by Jackson Township to the north, Monroe Township to the west, Marion Township to the south and Hendricks County to the east.

 

Marion Township is in the east central part of Putnam County. The legal description of Marion Township is Township 14N, Range 3W. Marion Township is bound by Floyd Township to the north, Greencastle Township to the west, Jefferson Township to the south and Hendricks County to the east.

 

Greencastle Township is in the center of Putnam County. The legal description of Greencastle Township is Township 14N, Range 4W. Greencastle Township is bound by Monroe Township to the north, Madison Township to the west, Warren Township to the south and Marion Township to the east.

 

Madison Township is in the west central part of Putnam County. The legal description of Madison Township is Township 14N, Range 5W. Madison Township is bound by Clinton Township to the north, Greencastle Township to the east, Washington Township to the south and Parke County to the west.

 

Washington Township is in the southwest corner of Putnam County. Washington Township consists of the 36 sections of Township 13N, range 5W and sections 1 to 18 of Township 12N, 5W. Washington Township is bound by Madison Township to the north, Warren and Cloverdale Townships to the east, Owen County to the south and Parke and Clay Counties to the west.

 

Warren Township is in the south central part of Putnam County. Warren Township consists of sections 1 to 30 to Township 13N, Range 4W. Warren Township is bound by Washington Township to the west, Cloverdale Township to the south, Jefferson Township to the east and Greencastle Township to the north.

 

Jefferson Township is in the southeast part of Putnam County. Jefferson Township consists of the following:

Sections 1 to 30 of Township 13N, Range 3W;

Sections 29 to 32 of Township 14N, Range 2W; and

Sections 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 20, 30 and 31 of Township 13N, Range 2W.

The portions of Jefferson Township in Range 2W was originally a separate Township called Mill Creek Township. Mill Creek Township was originally in Hendricks County, then became a separate Township in Putnam County. Old Mill Creek Township is now a part of Jefferson Township.

Jefferson Township is bound by Cloverdale Township to the south, Warren Township to the west, Marion Township to the north and Hendricks and Morgan Counties to the east.

 

Cloverdale Township is in the southeastern corner of Putnam County. Cloverdale Township consists of the following:

Sections 31 to 36 of Township 13N, Range 3W;

Sections 31 to 36 of Township 13N, Range 4W;

Sections 1 to 18 of Township 12N, Range 4W; and

Sections 1 to 18 of Township 12N, Range 3W.

Cloverdale Township is bound by Jefferson and Warren Townships to the north, Washington Township to the west, Owen County to the south and Morgan County to the east.
